Actor Arshad Warsi’s approach to life and health is different from the strict diets and fitness routines many celebrities swear by.

In an interview with Mashable India, he openly shares that he doesn’t spend hours in the gym or limit his diet, saying, “I’m not the guy who’s constantly gymming, working out, and not eating this or that.” Instead, Warsi enjoys a lifestyle where he eats and drinks freely. “I eat everything, drink everything, I have a good time in life,” he says, emphasising that “ignorance is bliss” and that he keeps stress to a minimum.

This perspective challenges the belief that health only comes from rigid routines, suggesting that a relaxed approach might offer its own benefits.

But is it possible to balance enjoying life thoroughly while staying healthy?

Neha Parashar, senior psychologist at Cadabam’s Mindtalk, says, “Managing stress has a profound impact on overall health, even for those who may not follow strict diets or intense exercise regimens. Chronic stress is known to elevate levels of cortisol, the body’s primary stress hormone. Elevated cortisol over time can lead to a host of health problems, including weight gain, high blood pressure, weakened immune function, and an increased risk of chronic diseases such as cardiovascular conditions and diabetes.”

She adds, “Research published in Psychosomatic Medicine highlights how stress management techniques, such as maintaining a positive outlook and engaging in activities that bring joy, can help mitigate these risks by lowering cortisol levels.”

Arshad Warsi’s philosophy of taking minimal stress aligns with findings in psychoneuroimmunology, says Parashar, a field that studies the interaction between “psychological processes and the nervous and immune systems.” A relaxed and stress-free mindset can help maintain a balanced autonomic nervous system, reducing the risk of stress-related illnesses. “In simple terms, reducing stress may not replace the benefits of diet and exercise, but it certainly supports a healthier heart, stronger immune function, and better emotional well-being,” she states.

Parashar, however, stresses that while enjoying life is essential, “moderation is key.” “The Mediterranean lifestyle, for example, balances indulgence with nutrient-dense foods and physical activity, leading to lower rates of heart disease and longer life expectancy. Warsi’s approach could be beneficial if balanced with mindful eating and occasional health checks to monitor key health indicators,” she remarks.

Some strategies to enjoy food and lifestyle freedoms while minimising potential health risks

Enjoying life and indulging in food and drink doesn’t have to come at the expense of health. Here are some evidence-based strategies to achieve a balance, according to Parashar:

Practice Mindful Eating: This involves paying attention to the taste, texture, and satisfaction of meals without distractions. Mindful eating can reduce overeating and promote a healthier relationship with food.

Follow the 80/20 Rule: Eating nutrient-dense foods 80% of the time while allowing for indulgence 20% is a practical approach that promotes health and enjoyment. This strategy ensures that essential vitamins and minerals are consumed regularly while leaving room for favourite treats.

Stay Active in Fun Ways: Physical activity doesn’t have to mean rigorous workouts. Activities like dancing, walking, or playing a sport can keep the body active while being enjoyable. Research in Sports Medicine indicates moderate physical activity can boost metabolism and cardiovascular health.

Monitor Health Metrics: Regular check-ups to monitor cholesterol, blood pressure, and glucose levels can help catch potential health issues early. Being aware of these metrics allows for timely interventions if needed without necessarily compromising the enjoyment of life.
